Anime and Cartoons are not the same. Although many of us think about anime as another style of Cartoon, Anime is nothing like Cartoon. In reality, they are each completely different in art vogue. A cartoon is basically from the West, and anime was created in Japan. Japan does not need anime to be thought of as a style of Cartoon. Unlike Cartoon, Anime has become an essential part and parcel of the trendy Japanese popular culture. Anime industries provide products in almost 112 countries, reaching some 87.2% of the world population. Anime brings quite $19 Billion a year. Here are a few primary distinctions between Anime and Cartoon.
The Cartoon was first created in the West. It’s an illustration or a non-realistic or semi-realistic variety of drawings that depict caustic remark, humour, or caricature. The word cartoon is derived from either, Italian word Cartone or the Dutch word Karton, both means “strong, heavy paper, pasteboard.” The specific meaning evolved through times. It was mainly created for making people laugh and be comical. Fantasmagorie is considered the first traditional hand drawing animated Cartoon created in 1908 by a French caricature Emile Cohl. The concept originated in the middle ages and first described as a preparatory drawing for a piece of art, such as painting, tapestry, fresco, or strained glass window. In the 19th century, cartoons were used in magazines, newspapers, comic books to clarify things, advocate or attack a political faction or plan later, and were used in risible functions. In the early 20th century, it began to refer to animated films that resemble a print cartoon.
Anime (ani-may) refers to the animation originating in Japan. The word “anime” is said to have come from the French term ” dessin animé, while others claim it was an abbreviation in the late 1970s. The phrase anime originally borrowed from the English word “Animation.” Katsudo Shashin, three seconds clip consists of fifty frames, is claimed to be the first anime. Its artist is unidentified, and also the date of creation remains unknown. In 1917, the early professional and publically displayed works began to appear. Renowned animators such as Oten Shimokawa and Seitarou Kitayama produced numerous works, with the oldest surviving film Namakura Gatana (An Obtuse Sword), two minutes long. Hakujaden, which was created in 1958, is considered the first color anime feature film, which is additionally thought to be the first anime by modern standard anime. Otogi Manga Calendar was the first anime series to be produced and televised (1961-64). In 1937, the success of Walt Disney Company’s feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs greatly influenced the Japanese animators. Osamu Tezuka, considered the Father of modern manga, used Disney animation techniques by merely modifying them. In 1951, he created the milestone manga Tetsuwan Atom or Astro Boy, which was later adapted into anime in 1963 and was an enormous success. In the 1980s, anime became mainstream in Japan, experiencing a boom in production with a rise in popularity. By the end of the 20th-century, anime had gained worldwide recognition and fame.
Cartoons typically haven’t got any deep story or vital plot; instead, they support journey, friendship, and risible ideas. There is some educational Cartoon while maintaining their humorous quality that is targeted towards children. Mickey Mouse, Tom, and Jerry, Scooby- doo, etc. are the famous Cartoon.
Anime often contains an advanced plot and unique storyline. Each anime have its unique and completely different way of story-telling. To understand this anime, you have to give it a lot of thought. Death note, Monster, Attack on Titan, Code Geass, Baccano, Full metal alchemist: Brotherhood, Steins gate, Tokyo Ghoul, etc. are the popular anime with deep stories and characters.
Cartoon characters are given a deformed touch to make more comical. Most of the cartoon characters are exaggerated and anatomically incorrect to the human physique structure. However, there are some exceptions, like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, etc. Although they’re influenced by Asian culture and anime, some individuals might argue they’re anime. However, because it was created within the West, it’s not an Anime.
Whereas, anime graphics tend to be more realistic and anatomically correct to the human body and activity, making it the closest thing to life, entirely drawn by hand. Anime characters embrace large almond-shaped eyes which shows emotions (sad, happy, depressed, angry, shocked etc.), big hair, and elongated limbs. Their countenance is way completely different than those of Cartoon. The drawing trend was influenced by Japanese calligraphy and painting, where a-round ink brush is used to produce a thick stroke.
Most Cartoons don’t have any specific genre. Cartoons instead revolve around humorous concepts because it is supposed to exert influence on laughter.
Anime contains a wide range of genres. Such as- physiological, thriller, mystery, romance, sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, supernatural, action, slice of life, comedy, Drama, Mecha, shoujo (for girls), shounen (for boys), ecchi, harem, yaoi, yuri, shoujo-ai, shounen-ai, etc.
Anime targets a broad range of audiences, mostly adults, and may evoke a sturdy feeling within the viewer, like suspense, thrill, sadness, happiness, worry, and compassion. Several scenes might feel troubling to kids; that is why dark amines or sophisticated anime aren’t meant for children. There is a kodomo (Children) genre, only for kids such as Sailor Moon, Digimon Adventure, Astro Boy, etc.
Whereas cartoon targets kids and most of them are only made for entertainment purposes.

SpongeBob, Dexters Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Jhonny Bravo, Ben 10, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Scooby-Doo, Batman, Superman, Teen Titans, etc. are the popular cartoon series.
People watching the anime for the first time will think of it as a cartoon, slowly but surely, they will learn the difference between them.
